Curriculum Vitae DO’s
- When preparing your CV, try to take a step back from it and see it through a stranger’s eyes. Don’t assume that the person reading will know what you mean, it’s surprisingly easy to miss out important details.
- Break it down into different sections while you write so you can easily see how it reads and describes your career so far.
- Evidence your skills instead of simply describing them. Use examples.
- Proof read your CV. Over and over again if you have to.
- Remember: be as professional in writing your own CV as you would in any task.
Curriculum Vitae DON’Ts
- Don’t oversell. Experienced recruiters can swiftly tell a CV that has embellished the truth and facts are easily checked.
- Don’t undersell.
- Don’t copy the crowd - be bold, stand out. Choose your referees carefully, you want to give insight into yourself and your abilities not just secure faint praise.
- Don’t try and lift a flat CV by listing irrelevant ‘achievements’ or using unnecessary jargon.
- Don’t be lazy: it shows.
- Don’t rely on spell-check, use it but check it yourself as well.
- Don’t use flashy layouts, text effects, using colour and unusual fonts.
- Don’t include personal interests at this point. If the client wants to know they will ask you at the interview stage.
